PeaCoat

THANKS for stopping by! first off though... have any of you read the post by john K "Does Everybody Want To Be A Character Designer?" it's a pretty good article, but it kinda trashes Total Drama Island (which is the show i am currently working on) I guess i'm not that suprised it is so criticised since it isn't done traditionally.. however i am a bit suprised that so many people agreed and thought it was bad. I personally love the designs, and i'm sure the intention is to take them as far as you can within your scene, however there's no time or money to make it like we'd all like to. Anyway. some interesting discussion over there.. I'll post some more of my posing stuff from Total Drama. (just gotta figure out how far along is it on the tele)

Above is some personal work.. its a concept i came up with while stuck inside sick all week. hope you like it!

Awesome!! Sweet stuff Walshy. I don't get to see your art enough these days.
And don't worry about critics like what's his name... John K? What does that guy know. His opinion is just that, his opinion. Some people like stuff, some people don't. Can't please everyone. The only important thing is to be happy yourself and pleased with your work and your progress as a creative individual.

John K. really misses the point. In his article he writes:

"A character design is ... a functional starting point for animators to use to make real personality."

This is true but the key word here is 'functional'. These design are intentionally flat, graphic and angular because that is what is necessary for your animator to be able to deliver 10 seconds a day of quality animation.

In *another* post where he sarcastically rips on this style and specifically on Total Drama he writes:

"It's all gonna be animated in India for 50 cents per episode which will give us more time to play with our circle templates and vector tools."

Strange, since TD is animated in Toronto and I would be very surprised if Ren and Stimpy wasn't animated in Korea.

Total Drama really does look great, especially for a flash cartoon. And, we all know that John K. could never work within the budget that you guys are given.

The unfortunate reality of television animation these days is that it is just too expensive to have the animators do the drawings.

I think people agree with whatever JK says...total dramma island has great design and animation...very stylized...just a different style than JK does
